Chairman’s message – March 2007

Many of the members have been emailing me and giving me some stick about the MFA’s catch and release policy, and here I am saying release your fish under the right circumstances and in the next breath…………………………it’s OK to kill that fish, lets look at what I said;

So I ask all of you that read this months message and who fish the river this season. Think long and hard, before you keep that fish, and for those that will keep their fish. Well you have paid good money to fish and it’s your right to keep your fish and no one should tell you otherwise.

Let me clarify here…………………….The MFA firmly believe in a Catch & release policy, subject to the conditions and it safe to do so without injuring the fish. It is a practise that is being adopted more than ever before and on a lot of rivers throughout the World. This has become a common practice, and why is that, quite simply, more and more sport fishermen are becoming aware that their catch & release actions will help towards preserving the numbers of fish for future generations.

Now what did I mean when I said; and for those that will keep their fish. Well you have paid good money to fish and it’s your right to keep your fish and no one should tell you otherwise.

The MFA as an organization endorse and support “Catch & Release” and we believe most of our members believe it’s the right thing to do. However, when it comes to the fishing office of the Mörrumsån that has no rules whatsoever about Catch & release. Then it can be assumed most will just kill the fish when not instructed to do otherwise.

The most important thing to remember when considering the critical situation regarding the Mörrumsån is that the numbers of salmon and sea trout are so low; all of our actions will be instrumental in the positive or negative future of the Mörrumsån.

Does the river Mörrumsån have a future, can it recover, and that would be a big yes if left to the MFA. Can you or us predict the future?

“The best way to predict the future is to create it”

Fiske 2006

All the very best for upcoming fishing season.
